I have always felt like I had 2 families. The one I was born into and share dna with, and the one I created for myself. This has never felt more true than the past2 days. I would like to thank all my colfax family members for their love and support.
On Thursday morning as I watched my house burn I can honestly say I have never felt more scared or more alone. Thank you to everyone who called, texted, emailed support. Thank you for your generosity and your caring. I seriously couldn't have managed without you all.
A brief update. I have a new place to live. 1260 Pennsylvania. It is a small studio and it is not stumbling distance to the ps lounge, but it is a warm safe place for Vosh (kitty cat) and me.
I went into the building this morning. The hallway and entrance looks like something from the pit of hell. It is truly a surreal setting. I however have been very very fortunate. Although the door itselt was burnt through, the book shelves and all the books are fine!! Even the ones next to the door. I guess it is harder to burn political tracts and economics books than previously thought. Although there is a lot of smoke damage, there is no water damage as most of the fire was on the other side of the house. The house should be safe within a week to 10 days and I will be able to recover most of my things. And then probably pay the biggest dry cleaning bill ever.
My neighbors were not so lucky, and the family across the hall was hit very hard. They will be in particular need of kitchen and housewares, so if any of you get new dishes from Santa, please pass along the old ones. They also have 2 kids, ages 2 and 5 if you have any kid stuff that would also be most appreciated.
Thank you again for all your support. I love you all.

Melanie,
Do we have a way to get stuff to that family as well?
We're glad your books are okay! More importantly, we're glad you are, too!

...following up with Dave's comment... what are the genders of your neighbor's kids and what sizes do they wear?
